Barbara Weston received a plaque at the 10th anniversary of our organization which read, "BARBARA WESTON, FOUNDING PRESIDENT SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER, NATIONAL WRITER'S ASSOCIATION 1990." Following her presidency, she served three consecutive years as Vice President, was instrumental in establishing our position with the Miami Book Fair, Writers in our Midst and Cable-Tap TV programs. She wore two hats as editor and associate editor of the Crescendo. She also served on the Awards Committee, the Conference Committee, the Nominating Committee and was Coordinator for the annual Contests.
In a historic moment at our May 3, 2008 general membership meeting, the president at that time, Dar Airan, purchased a $1,000 Lifetime Membership in memory of his mother and gave it to Barbara for our gratitude for all she has done past and present.

In late 1989, the Director of the National Writers Association, based in Denver, Colorado invited several South Florida members to discuss plans for starting a local chapter in Miami, Florida. The first meeting of the South Fla. Chapter of the National Writers Club was held on November 18, 1989 at the Don Shula Golf Club in Miami Lakes. Then, on January 13, 1990, the location was moved to the Howard Johnson's restaurant in Coral Gables. Later, the meetings were held at the University of Miami in the Otto G. Richter Library. The National Writers Club presented the Certificate of Charter on June 25, 1990.
By 1998, there were over 150 members. The benefits included: the annual contest with world-wide entries; publication of Crescendo, a quality anthology containing prose and poetry of both members and contest winners; exposure for theatrical presentations and an annual conference presenting the most esteemed representatives of the writing world.
